The current invention includes compositions having alpha methyl tryptophan, where the alpha methyl tryptophan includes the L isomer and does not include the D isomer. The alpha methyl tryptophan is used for treating cancer in patients, the method including administering to the patient to inhibit amino acid transport into cancer cells. In some aspects, the cancer cells demonstrate enhanced expression of the ATB0 ·+ amino acid transporter.
