The invention can enable a user to create an image like a hand-drawn ink painting on an electronic canvas by using a simple positioning device, and can generate a depth dot matrix of the portrait. The image and its depth matrix can be juxtaposed to form a complete image, which can be displayed as a three-dimensional image on a three-dimensional or autostereoscopic display. Users need only a standard positioning device, such as a mouse or joystick, to paint. In addition, more complex devices such as light pens, digital cameras and ultrasonic sensors can also be used.
Applications of the invention are numerous, including digital painting, education and entertainment.
An important aspect of the present invention is that a person can exercise program control over the art of painting and generate images showing the appearance of manual drawing. The second major aspect of the invention is that the painter can control the depth map of the picture. A third major part of the present invention is that it can be displayed as a three-dimensional image on a three-dimensional display, such as an autostereoscopic display, after its drawing and depth map have been converted into a complete image.
