Invention Summary
Vascular access by inserting central venous catheters (CVC) is a common medical procedure. It is used in connection with various therapies that require administration of crystalloid, drug delivery, introduction of cardiac pacemakers, stents, etc. The WIN NIC (Wire in Needle, Needle in Catheter) central venous catheter kit is a novel concept with intuitively preloaded kit components, transforming the traditional Seldinger approach to improve safety, efficiency and reducing time while making the procedure more cost effective.Central venous catheterization is an invasive procedure and often associated with serious complications ranging from 5% to 19% due to improper insertions. Recent ultrasound guidance has reduced immediate mechanical complications and the WIN NIC invention is designed to complement this approach.
Millions of central venous catheters are inserted annually in US hospitals with a global market of $645 million in 2013 and an annual growth rate of 4.9% through 2019. Significant cost savings to healthcare from WIN NIC are predicted due to decreased OR time, a potential decrease in catheter related blood stream infections and accidental sticks improving patient outcome.
·Cost savings from safer, rapid and efficient CVC placement
·Augmented Seldinger, no syringe required
·Designed for improved needle visibility if used in conjunction with ultrasound
·Improved procedure efficiency and manual dexterity with fewer steps
·Reduce adverse events due to insertion errors such as arterial puncture, needle dislodgement, multiple needle sticks, local toxicity, etc.
·Reduce procedure time from 15 minutes to 5 minutes
·Allow standardization and establish best-practice approach in central venous catheterization
