Modification of Pancreatico-biliary Stents to Facilitate RemovalDescription
Stents are medical devices that are implanted into body cavity passageways such as blood vessels, pancreatic, bile ducts, etc. to maintain or widen lumens through a body cavity. Although some stents may remain in the body for an extended period of time, many are only required for a short period of time and may be removed after several weeks or months. Procedures utilizing endoscopic snares and lassos are commonly used for the removal of stents; however, complications often arise during the removal procedure. For instance, in the case where a removable stent is a separate entity from the device used to remove the stent, complications may result from an insecure or poorly positioned connection between the stent and the stent removal device. Stents may fold or double over when pulled through the endoscope during removal, causing the snare or lasso devices to break and/or the endoscope channel being damaged. Technology Summary: The present invention includes a removable stent having easily graspable extensions or protrusions and methods for manufacturing same.
