Much evidence has been presented that implicates the abnormalities in particular genes with the development of hypertension (high blood pressure) and other components of the metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance and vascular inflammation. UC San Diego investigators have created a novel microRNA targeting a region of genes involved in human hypertension. This novel inhibitor could be used as a therapy to treat hypertension. In the spontaneously hypertensive rat animal model, this inhibitor was shown to lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This inhibitor could be a novel treatment in human hypertension and the metabolic syndrome.
