Computer-Aided Bone Distraction

Technology description

Bone distraction is a therapeutic process for treating fractures lengthening limbs and correcting other skeletal defects such as angular deformities. In this process external fixators which are mounted on the patient's limb are used to apply controlled 'tension-stress' forces to the limb to deform it into natural healthy tissue. After the fixator is mounted to the patient the bone is cur with an osteotome. Then adjusting the lengths of the struts results in the changing of the relative position of the rings which then forces the distracted bone ends to comply and produce new bone in between. later the fixator is removed and the resulting recanalization of the new bone will make it almost indistinguishable from the old bone.
