Endoluminal Gastric Restriction: Method and Apparatus

Technology description

Summary

The researchers at Ohio State have developed an endoluminal restriction apparatus for creating a stoma in the stomach cavity. Utilizing a suction port that has been inserted orally into the stomach, the apparatus may be applied to collapse the stomach wall, thereby forming a sizeable mass of the wall to gather around the port. A variety of temporary or permanent binding mechanisms, delivered via the apparatus, can then be used to bind the gathered tissue into a stoma, thus forming a restriction. This method and apparatus provide an alternative, non-invasive, reversible bariatric solution for obesity treatment that can be transferred to many other potential applications including abdominal surgery, tubal ligation, treating gastroesophageal reflux disease, and placing removable gastrointestinal stents.
